The basics of Indirect painting

Difference between traditional indirect painting and Modern direct painting

Traditionally we compartmentalise colour and make it a separate process- In modern painting we don't. Modern painting is massing and modelling -= bush process.

You work from big to small, translucent to opaque, dark to light.

A fast ground needed for this and a 50/50 medium

Direct painting is wet into wet like this >

Wet into wet

Chunky definite edges

Temperature changes in colour

Thick physical paint

Defined plains of light and shade

This is direct painting

Indirect is wet over dry

Translucent painting over a painting Like this >

These pictures glow

We let the light into them and back out again

Soft transitional lighting with good blends

A flow of dark and light

A tonal picture

So stage one paint wet into wet

then when fully dry paint indirectly wet over dry.

Wet over dry boils down to 2 core techniques  1.  The glaze and 2  Scumbling

A glaze is a wet film of translucent paint that goes over a dry underpainting.  It must be translucent so the light can get through it.

Scumbling is a broken film of paint over a dry underpainting = a dry glaze.

To make a glaze  Thin out a paint - any paint. Mix with 50/50 medium = wet glaze.

Paint + wax is good for scumbling.

A glaze is unbroken; a scumble is broken.

An example of a glazed picture >

The glaze has softened the edges

Steps 1  Get the right Ground (Short) which should be value 5 -  any colour. For max. luminance use white

2.  Use Ivory black which is translucent for the darks

3  Get the lights in. They need to be more opaque than  the darks. Use TWhite which is opaque.
Make sure now that the darks are really dark and the lights really bright to maximise the contrast. When glazing don't paint in little bits. Then work directly into the glaze.
A glaze can be repeated.
Varnish at the end.

Exercise: Get a few Grisaille images (=B&W) and glaze them.
Example of a colour glaze on this painting

Put some medium on the palette - then mix in the colour - blue in this case

Blue over the clouds and the sea

Next he uses orange over the sun area

Next he uses white with very soft touch. You can also add paint now directly as in the water

You can lift some glaze with a cloth

                                                                    Finished glaze

Example 2

Because the apples are red he mixed green into the black background
Cut back into the form with a cloth.
NB Don' get solvent on your brush!!!!!

   Simply Oils Parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 above

" Fearless Oils"  is a PDF download

5000K  lightbulb if possible  - could settle for 4000. 2 small tube lights suspended over the painting.

Short Ground     Painting on a short ground means the paint dries fast

Acrylic Gesso medium       Gesso + whiting     Or white acrylic + whiting  3paint / one whiting

Fast drying  Add chalk or whiting to your paint  mixes as you go .........

Quotes from Martin

"Washing your brush is the best way to kill a painting" because the fresh solvent lifts the paint already on.

He was layering at that stage - putting transparent paint on top of other paint.

" ... the management of light and that means Transparent paint"

                                                             Simply oils   PART 1

The name of the paint is up to the manufacturer.

Only the pigment code lets you know what paint is in the tube e.g  PR 108 is Cadium Red

Paints that you must have :

He uses Gamblin 1980 paints

Ivory Black (Transparent)  and T White

Cad Red, Yellow and UM Blue

also Cad. Orange   Sap Green  ( or Phthalo Green)

and  Dioxidine Purple (or Al. Crimson)

Special extra   >   Raw Sienna a universal additive to other paint

Its a great way to modify your colours

(Y Ochre will also do.)

Dont put the dark colours near each other on the palette

How do you get the paint to dry fast???     >>>>>>>>>>>

DONT put oil in your paint  - it makes the paint greasy

Best choice is a quick drying no-odour SOLVENT

Gamsol (Evans)

Mediums are the next best choice  Gamblin  Galkyd (Evans)

Oil is the worst choice.

                         No Odour

Use OMF       or  Gamsol  or  Shellsol T    Sansodor

Gamsol is designed to be used with Galkyd.     Gamsol does not evaporate!!!!!

So easy to keep using - no waste.

Which oil medium to use??

Gamblin Galkyd    or Liquin       You can get generic Galkyd

How to prepare 50/50 medium    Get a Jar (airtight)

Half Resin which is the Alkyd +  Half odour free Solvent

Stir to combine.  Then add a little extra Solvent on top and Cap it in the jar.

The filberts are Hog or Bristle
Sizes 12   8   and  4

 soft sable brushes for glazing

Round size 2

Get a wire bin for oil rags and paper because they need air

Rags with oil paint on can get hot!!!!

Daylight Fluorescent tubes are best

Avoid easel spotlights!!!!

How to make a Short Ground (Gesso)

3 parts paint to one part chalk

Store with a lid on.
Can be used on any surface that will take a water based paint even paper

                                                                 Simply oils  Part 3

You can mix towards the warm or towards the cool.

All colours must fit somewhere within these 6 Hues

      Showing various shades of RED

To make an orange warmer add Yellow
To make a green cooler add Blue
To make a violet cooler add Blue
To make a violet warmer add Red  etc

Colourful greys
are made by mixing across the wheel.
e.g.  Red + Green make a lovely grey
To warm that grey add Red
To cool it add Green

Colour value

Adding black is the only way to darken a colour without changing the temperature
Top Tip: Whenever you use Yellow add White
Blues and greens are more robust and can be mixed more roughly
without loosing the inherent colour.

A range of tints from Green and from Red below.

Add Black for shades.

Best to mix colours in close proximity - cool to warm to dark to light

                                                                       End of part 3
                                        ******************************************

Martin started with  White all over the board - spread with 50/50 medium which makes the surface greasy
He then added the boats etc.

Next using Paynes Grey he started to underpaint  the sky and then with Naples Yellow on the left
The paint goes on so thinly that the opacity is not there
Keep the paint very transparent to achieve the light effect

Touch of green top left     Then feed some blue in (Don't clean the brush) BECAUSE the solvent will do more harm than the clean will help!

Wed. 2/11/22    Stage 1    90mins demo.  on board.

Already The colours are clean.   Good value separation.    Ground

This was my first day effort!!! on very small board.
I find the paint not drying fast enough and making it difficult to work it. Foreground is very poor.
Values not bad.
